Cucklet Church is a secluded limestone gorge near the historic village of Eyam in the Peak District, known for its poignant connection to the Great Plague of 1665–66. When the villagers self-quarantined to prevent the spread of disease, they gathered here in secret for outdoor worship, with sermons delivered from a natural pulpit-shaped rock formation. This sheltered ravine offered a safe and sacred space in a time of fear and sacrifice. Today, it’s a quiet, atmospheric spot surrounded by wildflowers and dramatic gritstone, offering walkers a moment of peaceful reflection amidst rich local history. The short walk from Eyam also takes in scenic views and other significant plague landmarks, making it a fascinating stop on any heritage trail.
